ವಚನ :

#ಎನಗಿಂತ ಕಿರಿಯರಿಲ್ಲ!

ಶಿವಭಕ್ತರಿಗಿಂತ ಹಿರಿಯರಿಲ್ಲ.

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪಾದ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಎನ್ನ ಮನ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ!

ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವಾ ಎನಗಿದೇ ದಿಬ್ಯ.

ಭಾವಾರ್ಥ: 

ಈ ವಚನ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ  ವಿನಯಶೀಲತೆಯನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸುವ ವಚನ. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ಪದವಿ, ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ,  ಧನ ಸಂಪತ್ತು, ಜಾತಿ, ಜ್ಞಾನ ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣವರಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಕಿರಿಯವರೆಂದು ಹಾಗೂ ಶಿವಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರಗಿಂತ ಹಿರಿಯರೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ಯಾರ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಪ್ರಾಪಂಚಿಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಹೊಂದಿ ಸದಾ ಜಾಗೃತವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೋ ಅಂತಹವರನ್ನು ಶಿವಭಕ್ತನೆನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬ ಅಹಂಭಾವವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾನು ಎಂಬ ಭಾವ ಹೊಂದದವನೇ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಹಿರಿಯನು. ಅಂತಹವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಹೋಲಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ತಾನು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಕಿರಿಯನು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಜಾಗೃತವಾದದ್ದು, ಅಹಂಕಾರ ರಹಿತವಾದದ್ದು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ “ನಾನು ಎಲ್ಲರಗಿಂತ ಕಿರಿಯನು” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ  ವಿನಯಶೀಲತೆ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ನಿಜಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಸಕಲರೂ ಭಕ್ತರಾಗಿಯೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶಿವ ಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿಯೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಕಂಡ ಸಕಲರಿಗೂ ಶರಣು ಶರಣಾರ್ಥಿ ಎಂದು ಕೈಮುಗಿದ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು ತಾವೇ ಕಿರಿಯರಾಗಿ, ''ಎನಗಿಂತ ಕಿರಿಯರಿಲ್ಲ'' ಎಂದವರು. "ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪಾದ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ, ಎನ್ನ ಮನ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ" ಎಂದರು. ಅವರ ಈ ವಿನಯ ಶೀಲತೆಯೇ ದೇಶದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಡೆಯ, ಎಲ್ಲ ಮೇಲು ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಜಾತಿಯ, ಎಲ್ಲ ವರ್ಗದ ಬಡವ ಬಲ್ಲಿದ ಶಿವಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಅನುಭವ ಮಂಟಪಕ್ಕೆ ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿತು. ಮೇಲುವರ್ಗದ ಭಕ್ತರ ಅಹಂ ನಿವಾರಿಸಿ,  ಕೆಳವರ್ಗದ ಭಕ್ತರ ಕೀಳರಿಮೆ ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಿ ಸರ್ವ ಸಮಾನತೆಯ ಗುರುಗಳಾದರು. ಶಿವಸ್ವರೂಪಿಗಳೇ ಆದಂತಹ ಶಿವಭಕ್ತರು ಯಾವುದೇ ಪೂರ್ವಾಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಬಂದಿರಲಿ ಅವರಿಗಿಂತ ಹಿರಿಯರಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಮಾದಾರ ಚೆನ್ನಯ್ಯ ಡೋಹರ ಕಕ್ಕಯ್ಯರಂಥ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಶಿವ ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಗೌರವ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರ ವಚನಗಳು ಸರಳವಾದರೂ ಅರ್ಥ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದು ಶರಣರಿಗೆ, ವಿನಯಶೀಲರಿಗೆ  ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಾಧ್ಯ ! 'ಪ್ರತಿ ಶಿವಭಕ್ತನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಹಿರಿದಾದ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಎನಗಿದೇ ದಿಬ್ಯ ಎಂದರು. 

ತಾವೇ ಕಿರಿಯ ಭಕ್ತರಾಗಿ ಇತರರನ್ನು ಮಹಾಭಕ್ತರಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುವದು ಎಷ್ಟು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ನಡತೆ, ಮಾನವೀಯತೆ!! ಇದೇ ಭೃತ್ಯಾಚಾರ.

Vachana:

Translation:

No one is inferior to me!

No one is superior to the devotees of the  Shiva!

I swear on your feet! I swear on my mind!

O Lord Kudalasangamadeva, 

this is verily the touch-stone for me!

Meaning:

 This vachana depicts the very high quality  ‘Humility and Empathy ’ Basavanna had. We should never look down upon any one; we can always find a positive quality in any individual if we take this attitude of "No one is inferior to me". The true devotees of the Shiva  are highly spiritual. Basavanna considers such devotees as the most superior beings. He says that he swears on his heart and mind and bows to the feet of the Shiva. He wants to remain humble forever. Basavanna says ‘There is no one inferior to me and devotees of the Shiva are the most superior’. True Shiva bhaktas are self-realized individuals who have conquered the ego and not affected by the material possessions.They are true devotees and superior to everyone. 

 Humility is a virtue we all must cultivate. It is a modesty. Humility is considered a virtue in most religious and philosophical traditions. To get in touch with our true self (the God within), we have to kill the ego.  When the ego or "I "is stilled, we get in  touch with true self and divine within. In Humility we reach the liberation or Nirvana. When one experiences the ultimate Emptiness (Shunyata) , one becomes free from suffering,  all illusions and self-deceptions. Enlightenment can come only after we cultivate humility.
