Guru Poornima :
It is a tradition in Indian religions dedicated to spiritual academic and enlightened teachers, who are  ready to share their wisdom, with very little or no monetary expectation, based on Karma Yoga. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day (Poornima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June, July) .
The word Guru is derived from two words, gu and ru. 'Gu' means ignorance and 'ru' means remover. Therefore, a Guru is one who removes our ignorance.

On this day, disciples offer pooja and pay respect to their Guru. It marks the Chaturmas, a four-month period in rainy season marked for staying at one place and teaching and giving discourses by all Gurus.
This  is traditionally observed by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains and Sikhs to revere and express their gratitude to the chosen teachers.

Guru Poornima in Shaivism and Yogic tradition:
The day is celebrated as the time when Shiva became the first Guru. He started teaching seven forms of Yoga and knowledge to the Saptarishis. Shiva, the Adi Yogi thus became the "Adi Guru". Adi Yogi expounded these mechanics of life for many years. The seven disciples became celebrated as the Saptarishis and took this knowledge across the world.

Guru Poornima in Sanatan dharma :
It is the day when the great sage Vyasa, who was  born on this day and  started writing the Brahma Sutras. Hindu monks and sanyasis observe this day by offering puja to their Guru.

Guru Poornima in Indian classical music and dance :
Students of Indian classical music and dance are the followers of the Guru Shishya Parampara and they celebrate this holy festival with great reverence.

Guru Poornima in Buddhism :
Lord Buddha gave His first sermon (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) to the five monks on this day at Sarnath, UP, India. And the 'Sangha', the community of the enlightened ones, was founded on this day.
Vipassana meditators practice meditation on this day under the guidance of their teachers.

Guru Poornima in Jainism :
According to Jain traditions, it was on this day, Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, after attaining Kaivalya, made Indrabhuti Gautam (Gautam Swami) his first disciple, and became Treenok Guha (the one who removes ignorance), therefore it is observed  as Treenok Guha Poornima, with veneration to one's Treenok Guha.

Guru Poornima in Sikhism :
The Sikhs observe it as an honor to their Ten Spiritual Gurus.
