गुरुर्ब्रह्म गुरुर्विष्णु गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्मा तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥
The Guru is Brahma, Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. I bow to that Guru, the Supreme Being right before my eyes.

When Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of India, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, on 5 September. He replied,
"Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers' Day".
His birthday has since been celebrated as Teacher's Day in India.
Though we celebrate the teacher's day every year we have forgotten the person responsible for the teacher's day celebration. Let us know a little about Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Birth -5 September 1888 –
Death -  17 April 1975;
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (native name Radhakrishnayya) was an Indian politician, philosopher and statesman.
Radhakrishnan is considered one of the most influential and distinguished 20th century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy.
In his own words what prompted him to take this study "The challenge of Christian critics impelled me to make a study of Hinduism and find out what is living and what is dead in it. My pride as a Hindu, roused by the enterprise and eloquence of Swami Vivekananda, was deeply hurt by the treatment accorded to Hinduism in missionary institutions".
This led him to his critical study of Indian philosophy and religion and a lifelong defence of Hinduism against uninformed Western criticism.

Radhakrishnan's philosophy was grounded in Advaita Vedanta. He defended Hinduism against what he called "uninformed Western criticism". He has been influential in shaping the understanding of Hinduism, in both India and the west, and earned him a reputation as a bridge-builder between India and the West.
Academic career:
He held the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta from 1921 to 1932.
He held the spalding Chair of Eastern Religion and Ethics at University of Oxford from 1936 to 1952.
He was the second vice-chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936.
He was  the fourth vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948.
He emphasized the physical, mental, social, cultural, moral, political, economic, and spiritual development of students. He also inspired his pupils to motivate, encourage, and educate people.

Political career:
Radhakrishnan started his political career "rather late in life", after his successful academic career. His international authority preceded his political career.

When India became independent in 1947, Radhakrishnan represented India at UNESCO (1946–52)

Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union, from 1949 to 1952.

Elected to the Constituent Assembly of India.

Elected as the first Vice-President of India (1952 -1962)

Elected as the second President of India (1962–1967).

Awards:
Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards during his lifetime.
Knighthood in 1931

Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954,

Honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

He was  one of the founders of Helpage India, a non profit organisation for elderly underprivileged in India

Quotes of Radhakrishnan:
"Teachers should be the best minds in the country".

"The true teachers are those who help us to think for ourselves".

"Reading a book gives us the habit of solitary reflection and true enjoyment."

"When we think we know, we cease to learn."

"The end product of education should be a free creative man who can battle against historical circumstances and adversities of nature.”

"A life of joy and happiness is possible only on the basis of knowledge".

"If he does not fight, it is not because he rejects all fighting as futile, but because he has finished his fights. He has overcome all dissensions between himself and the world and is now at rest...
