Mantra has the power to change one’s energetic structure, allowing the Divine to manifest in oneself in the form of Awareness. Mantra japa creates a vibration in our body, mind, consciousness and environment and  lifts our thoughts and our possibilities. Repeating the mantra in awareness based meditation creates a powerful and positive vibration which brings about lasting transformation in us.

Om' is a sacred sound that is known as the sound of the universe. Om is all encompassing, the essence of Ultimate Reality, and it unifies everything in the universe. The Om symbol represents the universal sound in a visual form.Om is pranava means “cosmic sound”. It is an important symbol in Yoga, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Meditating on pranava brings about unity with the Absolute Truth.
To perform Pranava meditation, focus the mind on the mantra Om,  contemplate on its meaning its sacred nature, repeating the mantra coordinating with each breath recited while breathing out. Pranava is known as the word of power as it is thought to be the primordial sound from which the universe originated. It is the most sacred of all mantras and syllables because it causes all our prana to unite with the Divine. Om can be thought of as the sound of God.
It has a profound effect on the mind and spirit because it helps the yogi to reach more subtle levels of Awareness, where they may rediscover their unity with the Divine. It a tool to shape, align with Consciousness itself. To understand our connection with the universe is to know our true selves, free from illusion. That is the essence of pranava.

Traditionally it is repeated 108 times a day while keeping count on a strand of rudraksha beads. This practice is called "japa yoga".
The guru gives mantra diksha initiation at birth or 5th or13th day by pronouncing the mantra in ears of the newborn or whenever the disciple desires to initiate into the yogic pathways. When the child starts vedic education the guru whispers the mantra into the disciple's right ear, along with instructions on how and when to chant it.
